Where can independent musicians get grants?

Most music grants are national: PRS Foundation, Help Musicians and Arts Council England in the UK; New Music USA in the US; FACTOR and the Canada Council in Canada; Creative Australia in Australia; and Initiative Musik in Germany. Eligibility depends on where you live, so start with your country.

United Kingdom

PRS Foundation runs the Open Fund for Music Creators, which supports UK-based music creators with a track record in creating, recording, touring and promoting new music. It has several deadlines a year; check the foundation's site for the current round and criteria.

Help Musicians' Record and Release programme supports UK-based professional musicians who are self-managed or self-released with funding towards recording and releasing new work, plus advice. Arts Council England's Developing Your Creative Practice (DYCP) supports individual creative practitioners in England, including musicians, to develop their practice; it opens in rounds.

United States

New Music USA's Creator Fund (often searched as the "New Music Creator Fund") gives grants to individual music creators in any genre, aged 21 and over with at least three years of professional practice; eligible regions rotate between rounds, so check whether your state is open.

MusiCares (Recording Academy) and the Musicians Foundation are not project grants: they help professional musicians with essential costs in times of hardship, paid directly to the provider.

Canada

FACTOR funds Canadian artists and Canadian-controlled companies through programmes including artist development and sound recording, usually as a share of eligible costs; French-language recordings are generally funded through Musicaction. The Canada Council for the Arts' Explore and Create programme funds research, creation and production for artists in Canada when its intake is open.

Australia and Germany

Creative Australia funds individuals and groups through Arts Projects for Individuals and Groups, and touring through its Contemporary Music Touring Program, for Australian citizens and permanent residents.

Initiative Musik's Artist Funding supports up-and-coming artists based in Germany with project funding for creation, recording, promotion and touring; artists contribute part of the cost and apply in German.

How to write a stronger application

Funders back a clear plan, not a wish list. Describe one project with a start and end, a realistic budget with quotes, what it will achieve for your career, and evidence you can deliver it — releases, shows, press, audience data.

  1. 01Read the eligibility rules twice before writing anything.
  2. 02Define one project with dates and measurable outcomes.
  3. 03Build a budget from real quotes.
  4. 04Attach proof: streams, press, shows, audience.
  5. 05Submit well before the deadline.

Where Virtual Publicist fits

Many grants ask how you will promote the work. Virtual Publicist gives you a matched list of journalists, curators and radio presenters for your genre and region, which makes the promotion part of an application concrete — and easier to deliver when you win.

The short version

  • Start with funders in your own country.
  • PRS Foundation, Help Musicians and ACE (UK); New Music USA (US); FACTOR and Canada Council (Canada); Creative Australia; Initiative Musik (Germany).
  • Relief funds like MusiCares are not project grants.
  • One clear project with a real budget wins more than a broad wish list.
