Reading the independent release calendar
Lead times, quiet weeks and the crowding around major release dates. What an independent artist can reasonably plan around, and what is out of anyone's control.

When should an independent artist actually release?
Far enough ahead that long-lead press can still act — six to twelve weeks of runway — and away from the weeks when a major release absorbs the attention of the writers you are pitching. Beyond that, consistency beats date-picking.
Runway is the only date that is fully yours
You cannot control who else releases on your Friday, but you can control how much notice you give the people you want coverage from. Announce and pitch with six to twelve weeks of runway and long-lead outlets remain possible; announce two weeks out and you have removed most of them from your own campaign.
The runway also buys the boring things: assets finished, links live, splits documented, and a target list built while you still have time to research it.
Crowding is real but overstated
Weeks around large campaigns genuinely absorb editorial attention, and December is slow for most desks. Those are worth avoiding when you have the freedom to.
But most independent releases are not competing with the majors for the same space — they are competing with obscurity. A perfectly timed release nobody was told about does worse than an averagely timed one with eight weeks of preparation behind it.
Cadence beats calendars
Repeated presence outperforms single events. A project that puts out something every eight to twelve weeks gives writers, curators and playlist editors repeated chances to notice, and each pitch benefits from the context of the last.
That is also how relationships mature. The fourth email to someone who has watched three releases go by is a very different email from the first.
The short version
- Six to twelve weeks of runway keeps long-lead press possible.
- Avoid obviously crowded weeks when you can, but do not overweight it.
- Obscurity, not the majors, is the real competitor.
- A steady cadence compounds; single perfect dates do not.
